LEON TO SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA 8 DAYS BIKE TOUR
DAY 1. ARRIVAL IN LEÓN BY THE CUSTOMER. ACCOMMODATION IN LEON.
DAY 2. LEÓN – ASTORGA (49 KM)
Departure from Leon a city rich in historical and architectural heritage and essential starting point for all those pilgrims. This first stage can be considered quite easy as to be softening as we approach the town of Astorga head of one of the largest and oldest dioceses in Spain.
DAY 3. ASTORGA – PONFERRADA (54 KM)
The stage is fractionated by the Ligonde mountain, which in turn divides the basins of the rivers Miño and Ulloa and the Concellos of Portomarín and Monterroso. Although the beginning is promising and offer a relax climbing of Mount San Antonio, the rest are modest, provincial and even national roads. However they enliven the journey with good examples of Romanesque churches, including the possibility to stop in Vilar de Donas to visit San Salvador, ancient pilgrim hospitals and the valuable cruise of Lameiros.
DAY 4. PONFERRADA – O CEBREIRO (50 KM)
We left the beautiful city of Ponferrada and began the climb to O Cebreiro. In a short time we will get to Villafranca del Bierzo, 24 km from Ponferrada. At the point of Faba we will find two turnoffs. Is better to take towards the Hostel as the terrain is less complicated, as we leave behind the province of Leon and entering in Galicia, more specifically in Lugo. And replacing the last forces to enter Cebreiro, the pre-Romanesque church of Santa María La Real will welcome us.
DAY 5. O CEBREIRO – SARRIA (40 KM)
On our fifth day we rode across the slopes of the Mount Area and we will face the climb form the high Poio. After these two sections will be all down to two paths; to the left by 633 LU direccion Samos where we will pass its Benedictine monastery that lead us to Sarria or if we chose to turn right by San XIl itinerary, 6.5 km shorter but more difficult. Once past some of these two sections Sarria will be closer.
DAY 6. SARRIA – PALAS DE REI (40 KM)
We could consider this stage as short but with some difficulty. Divided by the Sierra de Ligonde will cross the Concellos of Portomarin and Monterroso. As we pass through this stage we can make several stops such as the Church of Santa Maria in Portomarín, The Chapel of San Marcos and the “Crucero de Lameiros” in Ventas of Naron or a peculiar stop on the Pilgrims in Ligonde Cemetery. It will give us entry into Palas de Rei the Church of San Tirso.
DAY 7. PALAS DE REI – SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA (69 KM)
Already in the last stage, we will try not to spend all our strength because Santiago is closer than we expect. In this last stage we will pass through towns such as Arzúa and Pedrouzo. We characterize the passage through these two villages as simple and uncomplicated. The road becomes more difficult when we’re approaching the airport of Santiago, many pilgrims along this stretch they put foot on the ground because of the difficulty of this section. Without also for getting a stop at the Monte do Gozo where many of the pilgrims are the first view of the towers of the cathedral. Since there, we are just a few kilometers from the gates of the Cathedral.
